Master in Theology Theology

Structure and modules

Structure

You will specialise in one of two streams, chosen during the internal application process between years 2 and 3:

  • Theological & Pastoral Studies (TPS) or
  • Theology for Crossing Cultures (TCC)

Year 1
You must take all of:

  • 8 compulsory modules (totalling 100 credits)
  • Elective modules, at Level 4 or Level 5, to take the total number of credits studied to at least 120 credits
  • Weekly church placement module (non-credit bearing) and associated reports

Year 2
You must take all of:

  • 7 compulsory modules (totalling 70 credits)
  • 1 of either MP2.3 or MP2.4 (10 credits)
  • Elective modules, at Level 4, Level 5, or Level 6 to take the total number of credits studied to at least 120 credits
  • Weekly church placement module (non-credit bearing) and associated reports

Year 3
You must take all of:

  • 5 compulsory modules (totalling 60 credits)
  • Additional modules compulsory for the chosen specialism:
    • TPS a short dissertation (RD4.1) (20 credits)
    • TCC a short dissertation with a mission focus (RD4.1) (20 credits), the month-long cross cultural placement (DM4.2) (20 credits) and Global Theology & Practice (DM4.3) (20 credits)
  • Elective modules at Level 6 to take the total number of credits studied to at least 120 credits.  By agreement with the college, one enhanced BA-level module (at Level 7) may be taken as a challenge module in lieu of the equivalent module at Level 6
  • Postgraduate Research Seminars (non-credit bearing). These will normally take place monthly on a weekday evening: the details will be announced at the start of the academic year

Year 4
You must take all of:

  • Either a Long Dissertation or a Short Dissertation and a Short Project
  • Two taught modules: one must be at Specialist Master’s Level (coded 6.x) while the other may be either at Enhanced BA (Hons) Level (coded 5.x) or at Specialist Master’s Level
  • For TCC students, one of their taught modules must be either CW6.2 Advanced Islamic Studies or DW6.1 Christian Theology of World Religions
  • Postgraduate Research Seminars (non-credit bearing). These will normally take place monthly on a weekday evening: the details will be announced at the start of the academic year

Credit load

Normal credit load per year and range available (by agreement with College):

  • Full time: normal credit load per year is 120 credits; the range available per year is 100-140 credits
  • Part time (years 1 and 2 only): normal credit load per year is 60 credits; the range available per year is 40-80 credits

Requirements for Anglican ordinands (third year entry)

In addition to the standard components of Years 3 and 4 set out above, you will complete a suite of placements and will also study a selection of modules at Levels 4 and 5 to provide specific Anglican training (as approved by the Church of England). This will normally comprise MP1.7, BM2.1, MP2.3, MP2.7 and may include MP2.8:

  • MP1.7 Weekly Church Placement I (0 credits)
  • BM2.1  Word Ministry I (10 credits)
  • MP2.3 Anglican Ministry (10 credits)
  • MP2.7 Weekly Church Placement II (0 credits)
  • MP2.8 Ministry/Mission Experience Placement (0 credits)

These requirements are in addition to the standard components of Years 3 and 4, and so, over the two years of training, you would be required to over-credit by a total of 20 credits.

Please note

Elective modules are offered subject to viability (based on class size) and the College reserves the right to withdraw an elective module if there is insufficient interest; not all elective modules are offered every year.

Part time please note: if you wish to study Hebrew as one of your elective modules in your CertHE year, please note that the constraints of the part time pathways are such that you will automatically have to over-credit by 10 credits.  To avoid this, you may wish to defer your study of Hebrew to your DipHE year (ie Year 3 of 4).

These are the modules running in 2021/22.  This is a provisional list and is subject to change (electives and tutors). For a full list of the elective modules which are potentially available in any given year, please see the Programme Specification.
