Master in Theology Theology

Structure and modules

Our newly revalidated postgraduate programmes offer a broader range of option modules, especially in the areas of doctrine, church history and practical ministry, along with modules which are designed to integrate theological disciplines.

Structure

Year 1
You must take all of:

  • 8 compulsory modules (totalling 100 credits)
  • Option modules, at Level 4 or Level 5, to take the total number of credits studied to at least 120 credits
  • Weekly church placement module (non-credit bearing) and associated reports

Year 2
You must take all of:

  • 7 compulsory modules (totalling 70 credits)
  • 1 of either MP2.3 or MP2.4 (10 credits)
  • Option modules, at Level 4, Level 5, or Level 6 to take the total number of credits studied to at least 120 credits
  • Weekly church placement module (non-credit bearing) and associated reports

Year 3
You must take all of:

  • 5 compulsory modules (totalling 60 credits)
  • A short dissertation (RD4.1) (20 credits)
  • Option modules at Level 6 to take the total number of credits studied to at least 120 credits.  By agreement with the college, one enhanced BA-level option module (at Level 7) may be taken as a challenge module in lieu of the equivalent module at Level 6

Students are expected but not formally required to attend the Postgraduate Research Seminars (non-credit bearing) which normally take place monthly on a weekday evening: the details will be announced at the start of the academic year

Year 4
You must take all of:

  • Either a Long Dissertation or a Short Dissertation and a Short Project
  • 60 credits of taught modules: 30 credits must be at Specialist Master’s Level (coded 6.x) while the other 30 credits may be either at Enhanced BA (Hons) Level (coded 5.x) or at Specialist Master’s Level

Students are expected but not formally required to attend the Postgraduate Research Seminars (non-credit bearing) which normally take place monthly on a weekday evening: the details will be announced at the start of the academic year

Credit load

Normal credit load per year and range available (by agreement with College):

  • Full time: normal credit load per year is 120 credits; the range available per year is 100-140 credits
  • Part time (years 1 and 2 only): normal credit load per year is 60 credits; the range available per year is 40-80 credits
  • There are limits to how much you can audit based on your credit load for the year.  See the Programme Information page for details.

Requirements for Anglican ordinands (third year entry)

In addition to the standard components of Years 3 and 4 set out above, you will complete a suite of placements and will also study a selection of modules at Levels 4 and 5 to provide specific Anglican training (as approved by the Church of England). This will normally comprise MP1.7, BM2.1, MP2.3, MP2.7 and may include MP2.8:

  • MP1.7 Weekly Church Placement I (0 credits)
  • BM2.1  Word Ministry I (10 credits)
  • MP2.3 Anglican Ministry (10 credits)
  • MP2.7 Weekly Church Placement II (0 credits)
  • MP2.8 Ministry/Mission Experience Placement (0 credits)

These requirements are in addition to the standard components of Years 3 and 4, and so, over the two years of training, you would be required to over-credit by a total of 20 credits.

Please note

Option modules are offered subject to viability (based on class size) and the College reserves the right to withdraw an option module if there is insufficient interest; not all option modules are offered every year.

Part time students: if you wish to study Hebrew as one of your option modules in your CertHE year, please note that the constraints of the part time pathways are such that you will automatically have to over-credit by 10 credits.  To avoid this, you may wish to defer your study of Hebrew to your DipHE year (ie Year 3 of 4).

Modules

These are the modules running in 2024/25.  This is a provisional list and is subject to change (option modules and tutors). For a full list of the option modules which are potentially available in any given year, please see the Programme Specification.
