What you'll learn
This short course introduces students to the rich and varied ways in which Christians have interpreted the Bible across the history of the church. We focus on particular important figures such as Augustine, Schleiermacher and Calvin, and influential movements such as Historical Criticism and recent trends in 'theological interpretation'. We also spend a little time in the history of epistemology, because hermeneutics and philosophy are often closely intertwined. The aim is to learn from God's people in the past - both from their mis-steps and from their insights - so we can sharpen our ears to hear what the Lord is saying in his Word. We are convinced that learning from history is vital, as we seek ever greater wisdom and skill in discerning the voice of God in Scripture.
Each week will consist of a three-hour interactive lecture. Student preparation will be expected based on the set reading for each week and any additional online activities. Alongside the 3 hour lectures each week there are around 8 hours of reading each week. As this is a non-accredited short course there are no assignments to be completed
Students are expected to attend all classes and interact on the online forums between lectures.
This course can be taken in person or online.
